NEW WORK for 2024
Lunar Landings
The stories told in this series, Lunar Landings, were first inspired by the full moon of Aug. 1, 2023. A second, super moon, the Blue Moon, arose Aug. 30, 2023. Those two moons held my attention and the narratives that I depict in this series unfolded from my subsequent lunar research. The moon is a variable constant. Its predictability makes it a time piece of sorts, used to chart cycles. Attending to the moon harkens back to days when we were more connected to the earth and the celestial bodies; when we took the time to look up and when passings of the seasons and the cycles of earth’s creatures were noted in the naming of the moons. In this series I was interested in exploring relationships between the moon and the natural world- both real and imagined. My more-than-human neighbours in the Columbia River Wetlands became subjects of several narratives. I’ve also followed the story of the dwindling numbers of Woodland Mountain Caribou in British Columbia and Alberta. In both provinces, nurseries have been built in hopes of developing successful breeding programs. Wild Caribou are now enclosed to produce offspring. I imagine a wild Caribou mother courageously plowing through deep snow, heavy with her calf which is soon to be born. She carries the moon to light her way. In the artwork of Lunar Landings, I play with visual perception and take artistic freedoms to present magical realism while asking how the moon influences the lives of creatures and natural events. Let us take delight in our capacity to imagine as not only is this a joyful experience, but it can also help to illuminate new ways of being.
Thank you for your time and care as you view the stories I present in Lunar Landings.

Waxing Moon: Oaxaca, 2023, 20x20", soft pastel, ink, acrylic. Rooster crows the sun up and maybe the moon down. Rooster scratches and shifts the dusty dirt in a futile effort to keep the moon in place. Even as the sun brings forth a new day, the Waxing Moon will never-the-less rise and hover in the cerulean blue sky of Oaxaca. 950$

Wolf Moon. 12x12", softpastel, ink, acrylic. The moon has inspired art, literature, ritual and adventure since mankind first looked up and became aware of this celestial body. The capacity to create new stories is part of our humanity. So who said it had to be a cow jumping over the moon in the children’s nursery rhyme, Heh Diddle, Diddle. Why not let the Wolf jump over it after he is finished howling at it? 350$

Brown Bat on Waning Summer Moon. 12x12", soft pastel, ink, acrylic. Tiny Brown Bat swoops and darts, snatching wetland mosquitoes as the sun dips low and the moon rises. Tired and full, Brown Bat took a rest on the crutch of the waning moon. 350$

Goldfinch Dreams on Summer Moon. 12x12", soft pastel, ink, acrylic. In August I came across this beautiful goldfinch. I laid her to dream upon the full summer moon. And there she slept and had beautiful dreams. 350$

Summer Smoke, August, Columbia Valley. 8x8", soft pastel, ink, acrylic. Wild fires are becoming a common summer event. This past August 2023, there were many days I could not see across the valley. We humans struggle with the smoke but imaging the small creatures that are also part of our natural homes. How does a hummingbird survive with its tiny lungs, in such a smoke-filled haze? 150$

Hunter's Moon, Great Bear Rainforest, Oct 28, 2023. 30x60", soft pastel, ink, acrylic. Moon. Tides. A pull to reproduce. The salmon are hunted, but give life to their place of rest. The old growth forest is nourished and hold the spirits of all the creatures who live and die in this place. 4280$

Blue Moon in the Wetlands, August 30, 2023, 20x60", soft pastel, ink, acrylic. The second supermoon in Aug. 2023 brings the creatures of the Columbia wetlands, a shower of magic moonlight only possible when they decided to work together. 2856$

Pink Mother Moon, Blanket Glacier, April 6, 2023, 60x40", soft pastel, ink, acrylic. Soon to calve, Mother Caribou calmly and serenely trudges through the deep spring snow. She carries the moon to light her way. Her breath hovers and leads onward. 5712$

Sturgeon Moon, Columbia Trench, Aug 1, 2023. 40" diameter round, soft pastel, ink, acrylic. The dinosaurs of the deep Columbia River are a genetic legacy dating back 200 million years. Stay deep. Stay hidden and you may live a long time. 3808$

young Robin Drifting, 12x12", soft pastel, ink, acrylic. Late summer brought me young Robin, so close to taking off into his new life. Now he drifts. 350$
